Chromite ore was extracted from open-pit mines reaching depths of approximately 200 meters until 2005. In 2003, underground mining began. The underground mine is accessible either via an incline ramp or a mine shaft. Ore extraction started at level 500, from which the process proceeds upwards towards the bottom of the open-pit.
Domestic mining for chromite was restricted to a few locations in the United States, including Montana, California, and Oregon, and mining the mineral was only economically feasible during times of political conflict. During wartime, the United States government supported domestic production with price supports and strategic stockpiling programs.

degrees open pit mining can go up to a UPD of 23m depending on the market prices of Ferrochrome. •There are some areas in the Middle and South Dyke where the dip is quite steep at 22-24 degrees resulting in high stripping ratios. •In the North Dyke where the dips are above 24 degrees only underground mining is cost effective and practiced.

Jun 25, 2012 American mining firm Cliffs Natural Resources, is expected to sink roughly $3 billion into developing the mineral-rich ring. The investment encompasses an open-pit mine
Open-pit mining, or open-cast mining is a surface mining technique of extracting rock or minerals from the earth by their removal from an open pit or borrow.. This form of mining differs from extractive methods that require tunneling into the earth, such as long wall mining. Open-pit mines are used when deposits of commercially useful minerals or rocks are found near the surface; that is ...
